GIpSynoise's architecture

The objective of the directive, and thus of each partner regulation, is to carry out noise maps on an large scale, then to define action plans.

After having analyzed the needs for the cities partners, and done a state of the art of the existing tools adapted on the scale of the agglomeration, the tool was built on the basis of:
- A "runtime" of acoustic simulation
- A Geographical Information System software

GIpSyNOISE is thus a specific tool based on the platform ArcView 8.3, including the core calculation CadnaA , adapted to the needs, allowing the analysis of the data according to the European directive.

The choice of the SIG Arcview, distributed by company ESRI was justified by its opening capacities and programming facility. The tools used for GIpSynoise development are:
- ArcMap (standard functionalities of the GIS)
- Space Analyst (calculation of maps)

the GIpSynoise development was carried out in Visual BASIC, with the ArcObject library.

The choice of the CadnaA software, distributed by the Datakustik company was justified by the following characteristics:
- Software of acoustic simulation by propagation of sound rays since a receiving point
- Calculation of the noise level on a grid of point (horizontal cartography);
- Calculation of the maximum noise level for each building (impact on the population);
- Computing duration optimized with large territories with the adapted parameters of calculation.

A format of entry is defined for the following data:
- topography, buildings, surface property of the grounds, acoustic barriers, populations (INSEE), use of the ground (residential, industrial, mixed, etc...);
- characteristics of the sources of road noise (site and width of the ways, vehicles numbers, speeds, percentage of heavy lorries, type of traffic, coating, etc...);
- characteristics of the sources of railway noise (site and structure of the ways, characteristic of the trains, number of trains, braking, etc...);
- characteristics of industrial sources of noise;
- characteristics of airport sources of noise (importation format).

The input data are consisted 11 files with the Shapefile format, those had to be cut out in surfaces of calculation.

The selected models of propagation of noise are: NMPB/XPS31-133 for the roads, SRMII for the railways, ISO9613 for industries and ECAC.CEAC Doc.29 for the airports.

But, in order to give each user the possibility to combinate results with other specific data, the GIS basic menus will not be masked. There will be thus a use of the SIG on two possible levels:

- "synthetic aswer to the Directive"
- "confirmed GIS User"

The data necessary in entry are imported in a quite precise format.

All the data are stored in a Arcview data base. The data necessary to the runtime CadnaA are prepared and copied in the adequate repertories. The starting of calculation is done by an order launched from Arcview.

Calculations of acoustic propagation are carried out, and the results are recopied in the adequate repertories in the form of grid of points.

They are stored then visualized on maps or tables of different forms.
